SILVER WEDDING
ANNIVERSARY
|
Mike & Rita Celebrate 25 years.
|
As we head towards our 25 year reunion,
Mike & Rita Christmas are preparing to celebrate
their Silver Wedding Anniversary. Married on the 22nd
July, 1972 at St. John's in Lodge Causeway, Mike &
Rita now live in Cheadle Hulme, Near Stockport. They
have three children, Tina (23), Jason (20) and James
(11). Mike is a manager for a large engineering firm
in Manchester and spends a lot of his time jetting around
Europe and the States. Rita works in a local school
as a helper and, until he left for the seniors this
year, was able to keep an eye on James at the same time!
They have recently returned from a business trip to
the Antipodes, stopping off in Singapore on the way.
Before they came to live in the North, Mike & Rita
were on the verge of emigrating to Australia and Rita
wanted to find out just what it was that she was missing
out on! Congratulations to you both and who knows ...
maybe we'll be having a Reunion in your Golden year! |

5 minutes of FAME!

At the third attempt I finally
made it "Live" on air!
Radio Bristol's
Steve Yabsley on the Afternoon
Show was asking me about the
Reunion.....
..... and I dropped my mug!

Those of you living in the Bristol area who read the Evening
Post will have seen the article and photograph which appeared
on 2nd August. (click here to see
it now) Much gratitude is due to Phil Ashdown who blackmailed
the Features Editor. (Thanks Phil, better keep hold of the
negatives!) This massive amount of publicity resulted in two
phone calls over the following weekend. One from Trevor Pope,
the other from Jean Brimson (née Comley). It was great
to hear from them again and both are now on the 'mailing list.'
The following
Monday I arrived home from work to find a message on my answerphone.
"Please contact Radio Bristol, we want to know more about
the Youth Club." I duly rang the following day and spoke to
a researcher who asked me if I would like to go 'on air' and
be interviewed by Steve Yabsley on the Afternoon Show? Well!
Game for a laugh? The following afternoon the researcher rang
me at 1pm and told me I had been given a slot after the 2
o'clock news and she would ring me back when they were ready.
I waited with eager anticipation (and some trepidation) but
the call never came through. Finally, at 10 past 4 she rang
me apologetically and said that Ruth Madoc had over-ran and
they couldn't fit me in as they were running late! Hi-de-blooming-hi!
The following
day we tried again. This time, after one false start following
the 1pm news bulletin, my 5 minutes of Fame arrived at 1335
on Friday 9th August. At the third attempt I finally made
it 'LIVE' on air. Radio Bristol's Steve Yabsley on the Afternoon
Show was asking me about the Reunion .... and I knocked my
mug over! We chatted about the Youth Club and what we hoped
to achieve with the Reunion and then, as soon as it had begun,
my 5 minutes of fame was over. I made another cup of coffee
to replace the one that was on the floor and sat back to receive
the flood of 'phone calls from ex-Club members.
Of course, no-one
did ring. I suppose most of them would have been at work at
that time of the day anyway. Either that or Ex-Club members
are far more discerning in their listening habits! Never mind.
I enjoyed the 'fame' as long as it lasted.
Now if only I
could get this guitar to stay in tune I think it could be
a hit! Na-na-na-na-na-na- - - NAH! |

It was with great sadness that
we learned of the sudden death of Joy Butler on 3rd August. Joy was a member
of the Youth Club at Argyle during the late 60's and early 70's. She was
also a member of the Girls Brigade led by her Mum, Jean. Joy was married
but had no children and had recently celebrated her 40th birthday. She
will be sadly missed.
Also during our search
for former Youth Club members we learned of the sad death of another of
our old friends. Steve Webster also died tragically young and will be missed
by all. |
